Using a credit card to pay online for products or services is pretty common in the west. In the Middle East? Not so much.
We don’t know if it’s because cash is king or that consumers in the MENA region are afraid to use plastic money because they’re not sure how it works. But things are changing pretty fast as we see the newer generation embrace more technology and way of life.
However, there are certain myths that cause a lot of fear and confusion among consumers, hindering their adoption of online payments. We’re here to break them for you:
Myth #1: Online payments are not safe
This is the biggest myth of all time. When we constantly hear about data breaches and personal information leakes, it’s not surprising that many people are scared to share their credit card or personal details with merchants online.
But banks, payment processors, and payment gateways have made it so much safer for merchants to accept payments from customers without ever having to store or view their personal information. Most credit card or online payments protect customer information such as their name, card number, security number, and other details and encrypt the information when it’s entered online. So consumers don’t have to worry about someone stealing their information or using their credit cards for unauthorized transactions.
Myth #2: Online payments are more expensive
Back in the day, when the world of eCommerce was taking off, online payments might have been expensive because credit cards were the only way to pay merchants. However, with the rise of payment gateways, online shopping has become much more affordable (if not less costly) than regular shopping.
Consider this, when you go to the mall to shop, you spend money on gas, food, coffee, and a bunch of other things before you make your intended purchase. With online shipping, you’re actually saving all of that money, plus have the convenience of things being delivered to you front the comfort of your home.
Myth #3: I need a credit card to pay online
There are so many different ways to pay online today without having to use a credit card — Dibsy, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay… we can go on!
Banks, payment gateways, and payment processors have made it super simple for consumers to pay using their debit cards or use funds directly from their bank when shopping online. And the good thing is that consumer information is always safe and secure. Merchants, therefore, have an advantage in accepting payments from multiple methods and offer convenience to customers that don’t want to use a credit card.
